Elon Musk pone la mira en las tierras raras de Sonora: Su equipo estudia potencial para extracción

Elon Musk, el hombre más rico del mundo, tiene la mira puesta en Sonora por su potencial para la extracción de tierras raras, minerales estratégicos para la fabricación de vehículos eléctricos, robots y otras tecnologías.

De acuerdo con Iris Sánchez Chiu, presidenta de la Comisión de Minería del Congreso del Estado de Sonora, hay indicios de que personal vinculado con el empresario considerado como el primer trillonario del mundo estudia la región, aunque reconoció que no tiene certeza.

“Ahorita lo que está muy fuerte en Sonora es el tema de las tierras raras (…) de hecho acabo de escuchar que, en el caso de nuestro estado, ya está gente de Elon Musk estudiando todo este tema porque están interesados”, afirmó la legisladora a El Financiero sin precisar qué empresa estaría involucrada, en qué zona se realizarían los trabajos ni el alcance de las posibles investigaciones.

Las tierras raras comprenden 17 elementos químicos metálicos que son esenciales para la transición energética, ya que son utilizadas en la fabricación de motores para vehículos eléctricos, robots, turbinas eólicas, equipos electrónicos y otras tecnologías avanzadas.

Para Elon Musk, estos minerales podrían tener aplicaciones en negocios como Tesla, por la producción de autos eléctricos; Optimus, su proyecto de robots humanoides, en SpaceX para los cohetes y la infraestructura, así como para otras tecnologías vinculadas con la automatización y el desarrollo de hardware.

De acuerdo con la Agencia Internacional de Energía (AIE), hasta el primer trimestre de 2026 la demanda de tierras raras utilizadas en se duplicó con respecto al primer trimestre de 2020, previo a la pandemia de COVID-19. Además, se estima que su demanda aumentará un 36 por ciento hacia 2030, es decir que se requerirán aproximadamente 240 mil toneladas de dichos materiales.

La importancia económica de estos minerales también está relacionada con la concentración de su cadena de suministro, ya que actualmente China concentra alrededor del 60 por ciento de la producción minera mundial de tierras raras y más de 90 por ciento de su refinación, según la AIE.

“Según lo que tengo entendido, por ahora los proyectos de tierras raras sólo están en una fase preliminar, me parece que están en fase de exploración, pero esto nos habla de que hay un gran interés en sonora para ser proveedor de tierras raras”, agregó la legisladora del Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI).

Of these, ten related to deals and corporate matters, five reported production results, five covered resource and development updates, three addressed Mexican-related issues, three presented exploration results, and one announced financial activities. ON MEXICO ISSUES, PROFECA reported mining spill In Mina Sabinas, Zacatecas and temporarily closes part of a Peñoles storage facility. Heliostar Metals, Minaurum Silver, Axo Metals and Capitan Silver reported the best drilling intercepts in Mexico on the fourth week of October, 2026. Gambusino Prospector reported the best Lead and Zinc drilling intercepts in Mexico on the Third Quarter 2026. ON EXPLORATION, In Sonora, Algo Grande engaged Addison Mining Services to update the NI 43-101 Technical Report on its Adelita project. Mexico’s Best Drilling Intercepts, Fourth Week of October 2026

Four companies company released results from drilling projects in Mexico during the week.

Heliostar Metals presented results from resource infill drilling at the High Grade Panel and down-dip exploration drilling at the Expansion Zone on its Ana Paula project in Guerrero. “A total of 122 holes and 35,121 metres have been completed at the deposit….” as part of the program to support the upcoming feasibility study (FS) and to explore down-plunge mineralization below the scope of the PEA mine plan. The company geologists interpret the mineralization at Ana Paula to represent a shallower part of a system where the main potential is associated to the contact skarn alteration of a deeper intrusive body, as in the multi-million ounces deposits at the Morelos Complex and Los Filos within the Guerrero Gold Belt. In that light the favorable intercepts below the Expansion Zone represent a good omen for a deeper concealed target.

Capitan Silver reported results from 22 diamond holes part of the 60,000 m drill program at its Cruz de Plata project in Durango. The company suggests a newly discovered event of silver-rich carbonate replacement mineralization is overprinting the intermediate sulfidation epithermal mineralization of the Jesús María Trend. Additionally, Capitan Silver identifies the adjacent Capitan Hill low sulfidation mineralization as a distal oxide gold deposit.

Axo Metals announced drilling results from its San Antonio project in Sonora. The company reported results from 33 holes, approximately 3,700 m of drilling, from the Luz del Cobre target, the Gap Zone between Luz del Cobre and the Sapuchi resource and testing on the Sapuchi deposit periphery. The San Antonio project is part of a large iron oxide copper gold system (IOCG) with a complex pre and post mineralization structural history that first focus and then displaces separate gold, copper and silver occurrences in a district more than 100 square km in size.

Minaurum Silver reported drilling results from the (Africa (new discovery), Europa Sur, Quintera, Promontorio Sur and San José veins at its Alamos Silver project in Sonora. The expansion drill program is focused on growing the current 55 M Oz AgEq inferred resource on this intermediate sulfidation epithermal system.
